Online learning provides an engaging and effective means to comprehend and achieve mastery of course content and earn credits toward graduation. It also builds computer technology and higher-order thinking skills that are critical for success in today's digital age.

But online learning is not for everyone. Particularly for the middle and high school years, it requires the ability to work independently and the discipline to stay on track. While online learning lets students set their own schedule, they must still progress at a pace that enables them to meet assignment and test deadlines and complete coursework within the semester.

In grades K–8, students have greater flexibility in terms of pace—if your child needs more time to grasp a concept, he or she can take it. Students in grades 9–12 have more pacing requirements. Students who have a high probability of success in online learning generally display the following characteristics:

  1. is self-motivated and exhibits maturity
  2. possesses reading and writing skills at or above current grade level
  3. is willing to ask the teacher for help
  4. exhibits organizational and time management skills
  5. is comfortable with using technology
  6. has realistic expectations of online learning courses

Please consider each of these characteristics. If your child does not meet most of them, online learning may not be best for his or her success. If some characteristics are not met, your child may still succeed but with difficulties.
